eurocarparts list a japanparts oil filter less than £4, but I have always used genuine filters I have a fear of a cheap one having less filtration properties and costing me more in the long run,

I think people are scared of their engines going pop seeing replacements are expensive. But, looking at some of the non OE filters out there especially blueprint, they are made by Nippon, who actually make OE parts for Subaru and Nissan so basically it is an OE part.
As said though, i'd like to see some sort of proof of motorfactor filters being worse than OE.
Wasnt there someone pulled apart all of the filters and proved that some of the cheaper filters were actually better at filtration? I'll see if I can find the link.
I use the UFI filters from Opie, no problem and larger than the tiny Subaru things. Cost is kept down by the deletion of the drain back diaphram valve which, because the filter hangs vertically down on the Subaru, is not needed as oil cannot drain from the filter. (Unless you roll the car!)
