Default Transplant MAF sensor into other housing?

I had a search, but couldn't find this. I have a 1998 Version 4 STI with orange MAF. I am getting error code 23, MAF. My housing is in very good condition. I managed to get hold of a replacement part at a good price secondhand, but the housing is not very good. Is there a way to move the (hopefully good) sensor from the crap housing to the good housing? I have had a quick look inside the MAF box from the top, but it looks complicated, and I can't afford to make matters worse!
Thanks for any advice.

Dont ever do second hand ones mate, done it, and nearly ruined engine. For the sake of a hundred quid then go for a brand new one
