Bottom end gone...maybe
2002 STI UK Prodrive PPP.
I think I have done the bottom end on the engine.
I had all the stuff for the oil change, but was putting it off until I pull the lump to do the clutch in a couple of weeks time.
On way home the other day, engine was making a funny noise on lift off, then when I was almost home, the oil light flashed on as i went round the corner. Drove the last mile home slowly. Did the oil change anyway.
Now on overrun there is a pronounced knock. Is this the sort of knock people expect for the classic "bottom end has gone", or should i be looking for other possible causes?
Obviously every engine is different, but can you normally get away with a new set of main shells, or is it a crank regrind or what?
Any scooby experts in Mid Sussex fancy a look?

I would get your car checked over by a scooby specialist who knows what to look for, what they are doing asap, don't drive the car neither mate as it might cause more damage. Might not be the bottom end, could be a number of things. If it is the bottom end its not just a case of new crank etc,its a whole rebuild.

Oil light flashing going round a corner indicates very low oil level, although if the bearings have gone, the oil pressure will have fallen anyway.
How much oil came out when you drained it? Hopefully not, but If you've allowed the level to drop so far, your punishment has been, to a large extent, self inflicted, I'm afraid!
I'm not saying that this is your case, but there have been a number of posts on here saying "I didn't bother to top it up as I was going to do an oil change next month"
