Default wot turbo

I have a my98 wrx import(wagon)Iwas told that the turbo is a td04 ,had a look for some writing on it and could only find IHIturbo.Could this be a vf23.
Was also told that the imported wagons were allways TD04s.
also any idea on the bhp been told 250,260 280!!!

Get it on rollers and find out what your running BHP wise.

Does sound like the VF series. but which one

It might well be a vf23, however if your car is an 'auto' opposed to a manual then it might be a vf24. It might be worth removing the kickplate in the passengers footwell and see what ecu your running as this might help. if it has a 3 pin ecu then its possible the car might have been made after october 98 and using ecu tek software(E3)MY99 or might well have an aftermarket ecu fitted. Power wise a std 98 wagon has 250 ps(246 bhp) or 240 if it is auto.
