Default Mud flaps!

Fitted rear mud flaps on my classic had a look at front, and you have to drill self tappers in,and it looks like it will go into the metal flange with little clips.
Now I'm just a bit reluctant to drill into metal don't want to leave it open to rust.
Any advice on what I can do to protect this?

Was thinking of a pilot hole and painting it but as soon as you screw into it that will be gone?

Any ideas would be grateful.

i done my newage ones myself and the outer arch just clipped in and the inner arch where the self tappers go, i drilled them into the carpet like rubber material, if your metal bracket for the mudflap is straight just bend it a bit as i did

its not my car in the link but who cares.

the two red circles is where the outer clips go, roughly. and the blue circle is where the self tapper went roughly, it was a thick carpet like material and it is like a dark grey colour, i bent the bracket to get it too line up with the carpet thing. this is newage however, so i dont know if the carpet thing is there in a classic.

Not quite the same on mine looks like the tapers go about where the red circles on that pic.
And i think behind that will be a flange from the wing.
Thats what i dont want to drill into, ?If it was just plastic I wouldnt worry.

when I did mine on my 03wrx, I drilled the hole, put waxoyl on the screw and used a rubber washer in between bracket and inner wing, never had any issues.

Waxoyl sounds good but is there anything more permanent?
