Default Alternator advice

Hi my 94 type ra seems to be holding back then surges under normal driving even when upto normal temp.

I can open to full throttle and no probs. just on cruising between 2 - 3500rpm.

I have no fault codes but the normal charging voltage is 13.8v and when the fans kick in the engine is very lumpy and the voltage drops to 12.8v.

Could the alternator be at fault ? i have a new batt fitted only 6wks ago.

Thanks, jon

Sounds a bit like more than 1 issue there mate. Whats the alternator output with heated screen and lights on?
Is your running issue caused by load on the engine?
Is the cooling fan and radiator in good condition? Ie fan partially seized, fins blocked in the rad?

Hi, the voltage is 12.8 with lights, screen and blowers on. Fans seem ok, its intermittant when driving, its like a cough but then clears. i can pull away no probs and open throttle at any stage and its fine with full boost.

It is a strange one ! trouble is its only doing 12 miles a week so sits alot, ive done 1500 miles between mots.
