I have a 99MY UK turbo with a K&N induction kit, I'd like to get rid of this and fit the OE airbox, I'm told it doesn't effect power and is probably better due to the air been ducted in from outside the hot engine bay, I'm also told the OE airbox will give the MAF a easier time so all in all it seems the right thing to do, but I don't have the orginal item, my question is which airboxes will fit? do they differ between models years ? or will any classic one fit?

All you have been told is correct

There are at least 2 different airboxes for the classic, you will have to do some research

Just had a quick look at mine and i am 99% certain this will fit yours,as it is off a 1998 car and the 4,5,6 versions all use the same airbox and air filter:
