Default Living with PPG Straight Cut Gears?

Hi Guys,

Im looking at buying a car with PPG Straight Cut Gears.

Was after some real world experiance on what its like to live with.

How reliable are they. How noisey are they? Do they require extensive servicing? Do they chew synchros? Are they at all practicle.

Preferred over 6 speed?

Can they be lived with as daily driver and expect 60k out of them with normal driving?

Thanks
C

Thanks.

ive done a few searches and really struggling to find any decent info from a real world point of view. most of it is to do with unbudgeted track builds.

I have a Straight Cut PPG in mine 1-4

Noise is awesome if you like that sort of thing. Its defo fine on journeys as i have a baby etc who finds no issue in sleeping. more noise from the exhaust

not sure about servicing tbh. i got mine 2nd hand from a mate who used it to drag (roughly 40-60 drags on it) running 450 ish. ive now run it for 6 months some of that time has been at 412/425. I dont hard launch it but i do change hard from 1-2 and 2-3 and its been fine. I picked mine up cheap but if i had money at the time i would of gone 6 speed just to be safer

im not sure on the servicing side of the PPG so if someone knows i'd be interested

Ahh ok thats good news then.

I do like the noise but dont want it to be intolerable.

Hopefully test driving on the weekend so we will find out then

Had mine in for years, I still love the noise. As for servicing, if it's syncro instead of dog engagement, I can't see why it would be different to that of a standard box IMO.

PPG on mine albeit just gears 1-4 with 5th as normal. Best of both IMHO as you get the noise during acceleration bursts (I like the sound & it's really not that loud) yet not when cruising in 5th. Lighter than a 6sp too Mine is new so no idea on servicing as yet. As above I don't generally launch from zero as 1st to 2nd change would worry me under full load (I'm a worrier!) instead I part throttle accelerate until in 2nd then give it some

TX.

What power are you running with the ppg? should the 5th gear last on big power?

400hp proven albeit more like 450 now that boost control sorted. It's fine changing 4th to 5th when giving it some (recently did 30-130 day which involved 10+ spirited runs at full acceleration) ... I don't really understand these things (!) albeit think that the change of gear is still protected by the box, it's just that in 5th there is no whine.

im 1-4 ppg straight cut and uk 5th, love the sound and nice and quiet in 5th. 6/5 play off has never been decided apon, there are people who have broken 6 speeds and people who have broken 5 speed ppg's. i think the main difference is the 6 speeds arn't idea ratio's, there too short.

personaly i'd go ppg kit
