Standard Fuel Pump up to 491bhp?
Hi,
Just changed my fuel pump to a walboro 255. When changing out I did notice that the STI pump looked a bit better quality (all metal rather than metal and plastic) plus it wasn't that much smaller. Now just picked up a copy of TOTAL Impreza and in there they do a test between Standard, Walboro, Tomei and Bosch where they reckon that
a) Walboro 255 doesn't provide as good a pressure as the standard pump, i.e. standard is better but (walboro 300lph is better).
b) Standard pump was used on a 491bhp impreza!
Now the walboro replacement seems to be very much the received wisdom in the UK (I think this is even part of the PPP upgrade). I have never heard of the alternative opinion, chucking in a 255 seems to be one of the first upgrade steps. Is anyone else running big power on a standard pump? Has anyone heard of standard pumps performing better? (The Tomei and Bosch tested better, tho you would expect it for the price)

Good question. They never mention whether it is an STI, Spec C, newage or classic.
My pump is from a Forester STI 2004 Unisia Jecs A42H24.
I would have thought that this is about as powerful as any standard pump as apart from the anti surge element the Spec C unit looks fairly similar.

yeh thought this test was a bit weird....
what a claim to make???? if the walbro 255 is so poor then why have the whole world preached on a this must have mod???
think they just ran out of things to write about in TOTALIMPREZA.

The pump on the 08 car is much better than previous pumps, if they had tried the test with classic or newage sti pump then it would have been a completely different result. I hope they were clear about this in their summary, as to not be would be very poor journalism/technical reporting, but I suspect it's the case or you wouldn't be asking for a second opinion on here!

A quick internet search shows that the Walboro is not just respected in Subaru circles.

Not the best pump ever but the best pump for the £
Most of the articles in Total Impreza seem to be from ScoobyClinic. Overall I enjoyed the magazine tho.

Walbro 255 - can provide enough pressure for about the 450hp mark.
So minus some for safety - say 420/430 ish. Above that you want to be going for a Bosch pump.
490 on standard - no way. Unless it is this 08 pump mentoned which I dont know anything about so cant comment (as I am still stuck in the modified classic dark ages)

490 hp need something like 280 lph fuel.
No idea what the 08 fuel pump can do but the largest OEM pump I believe is on the Spec C at 215 lph open end, which is IRO 165 lph @ 40 psi, so god knows what std pump the magazine is referring to

I'd imagine it's not just the capability of the standard fuel pump, it's the capability of the standard fuel pump after 10 years of buzzing away! Even for those of us without big power a Walbro or similar is nice insurance against pressure dropping.
Usuall total impreza mag full of spelling mistakes and misleading info. Im surprised there still selling these mags as its went downhill in the last 12 month.. Just my 2 bobs worth..
Re Total Impreza, I got pissed off with the way articles would start with half a page of politics for no reason other than that the writer had an audience to spout at; and the poor quality of the writing in general, especially the bloke who uses a comma every fifth word, whether one is needed or not. I subscribed, but I've found I never read it - it just sits on the coffee table looking pretty.
