Air Con - broken & making horrible noise!

Air Con - broken & making horrible noise!
Hi
I've got a '99 Sport AWD and this week developed a very odd problem with the air conditioning.
I used it one morning and it was fine. I turned it on in the afternoon and it made a horrible grinding noise from the right hand side under the bonnet - nearest I could liken it to is a very bad gear change! I've run the fan without the air con and it's fine. The minute I press the air con switch - this noise starts. Anyone got any ideas?
