Default Rear brake sticking on? Urgent help please :)?

Hi guys, i got home last night from a 20 mile drive with no heavy braking and my rear drivers side brake was far too hot and smelling of brakes!

Obviously it had been stuck on?
What are the usual causes of this and fixes?

My mate seems to think a new caliper will be in order?

If so should i get the RAC out to check it before driving it somewhere, or will it be ok for now to drive it to say the scoobyclinic? (10 miles from me)

I could do with it fixing asap is the only problem, as always!

Cheers for any help

Tom

two possible causes for starters.
The brake hose has collapsed inside so it wont release fluid off calliper.

Calliper not sliding on pins due to lack of grease or corrosion. Dismantle and check condition.

cheers for the help mate, got it sorted by the looks

me and a mate stripped it all down and had a look, he said the disc etc looked fine and like it hadnt got too hot, so thought it must be the internal handbrake stuff

cleaned it all down and tightened up the clips because they were loose and seems fine.

Going to get new clips and fit them this weekend

cheers for the help

Ive just been through the same prob. Took it apart and moved sliders and
piston etc and all was ok for a few days but then it returned.

Unless you or someone has been adjusting your hand brake/ replacing rear discs etc very recently, its unlikely it will tighten itself and cause the problem you had. The shoes do tend to stick when parked up for a while but they crack off when you start to drive.

Just incase your problem returns ... and assuming you have sliding calipers

Most likely reasons:

1) Pad has got slightly wedged in the carrier and contact points need cleaning and lubing so the pad can slide freely.
2) Piston is seizing which will need to be removed, cleaned/replaced.
3) Sliders are seizing so need removing, cleaning/replacing etc.

If you prob returns I wouldnt drive too far or fast as too much heat may b#gger the bearings etc and then you've got more of a job on your hands

If it becomes apparent that your calipers are nackered Ian at Godspeed brakes will sort them out a treat.

Yeah i had the same problem working on a mazda mx5!Took it in with a seized wheel!picked it up drove fine, stripped it down, all fine.Gave it back saying she must have been driving with handbrake on then a few days later it returned!Turned out to be a ropey piston that was sticking on and off!
