Question Best base engine for a classic?

Hi all

I'm contemplating building up a spare engine in the garage for my recently acquired MY99 UK classic. I need to figure out which will be the best base engine for me to build up from (based on my requirements).

From what i've read, it seems the STI engine (import only? 93-99?) is the one to go for, as it has a closed deck and possibly stronger internals (although i'll most likely be replacing these).

As far as my requirements go i'm looking for a direct drop-in engine (as in physically mounting to the chassis and transmission) that is stronger than what i've got today and with good head flow (enough for say 350bhp, which from flow figures i've seen the standard heads on my current engine should just about do that with a large enough turbocharger). I will be replacing the management & loom with something of my own choosing and will be mapping it myself.

So any advice or docs you can point me to will be handy, thanks

Cheers

Just buy a shortblock from a new shape sti, they are good for 450 bhp on standard internals and big improvement on the classic engine.

Thanks. How 'just' is 'just'? I've seen some comments about using older heads on newer engines. Do you know what's involved?

Classic sti engines are in the whole, open deck blocks, also they are not really much stronger at all, they all share the same con rods, for me i would look at a newage sti block (scdb) which has considerably better internals than the classic engine.

"Just" is very straight forward bolt all you parts inc heads on the new block ,a tuner will be able to supply the correct thickness headgasket. Pretty sure it will be a thinner than the standard one and away you go

All bolts straight on, you will require a remap though but Im guessing you already knew that.

Excellent, thanks. Yes it will be custom mapped.

Do you know where I could find information on any variations in the later blocks from what, 2001-current? (current being before it went to 2.5L I suppose)
