Hi Phill the knocking is not a good sign mate. Did you buy the engine or build it yourself? As a rebuild the mains and big ends should have been done so maybe piston slap??Is it centrally or left/right bank? I run mine in 500 miles on classic oil trying to stay under 3,000 revs the dump oil and run as per usual on usual grade.

Bin the 5w30 semi, go for a 10w40 semi, you need it running in, not killing

Did the engine get forged pistons?

They seem to be noisier when cold.

Run a 10w40 semi synthetic, dont go fully synth for about 5k miles as your engine will still be wearing in.

I tend to run in as :

3000-3500 rpm and little / no boost for 500 miles.
Increase revs by 500 each further 100 miles, so at 700 miles can use 4500 rpm, 6000 rpm at 1000 miles and some boost .... i.e. stay in I mode.

Use mineral oil for running in for first 500 or so miles, semi synth for next 5000ish, then good fully synth there after.

I'd change oil more often then the 10,000 miles Subaru say.

Surely your gonna get some sort of noise from a new build as it's bedding it's self in? Of course loud bang or knocking noises are bad. But quiet noises go after a while with a forge rebuild.
