Cold start problem
I've noticed that when I try to set off after a cold start (mainly mornings) the revs almost drop to 0 when I bring the clutch up (almost stalling) and when it does get moving, pickup seems to be very slow in first gear but once warmed up the problem disappears. Its definately not my clutch control!
I've had the plugs changed over the weekend hoping it would help but still there.
Any ideas why this would happen?

what are the symptoms of an idle problem?
Basically the revs are high on a cold start but soon settle down, i'm guessing this is normal?
On idle I can feel what seems like a very slight misfire. I thought this may have been sorted by the new plugs but its still there.
The only other thing i've noticed is that the temp needle doesn't sit in the centre of the guage. it sits between the quarter marker and the centre. On my other car (Audi A3) I had the same problem, which was fixed by a new coolant sensor.
Anything I should be looking for in particluar when its idling?
thanks

Regarding the revs dropping and nearly cutting out....
Have you tried cleaning your Idle Air Control Valve (IACV)
Make sure you buy a new gasket before you take the valve off its mount... my new gasket was £6 from Subaru
The part number for the IACV gasket is 22659AA120 on my 02 STI
see here for cleaning instructions...

when I looked at mine it had thick gunge like grease inside it - It should be clean, there is a stepper motor and a bar inside it that should move freely.. obviously having all the muck inside it doesn't do it any good at all.. car now idles fine but as it says on the web page do not attept to rempve it without buying a new gasket as the old one has probably stretched under heat and also only remove it when engine coolant is cold - not when engine is hot!
hope this helps..
