Is it defo a "Phase 1" 1996 i.e. upto and inc. Aug 96? Does it have individual coils on plugs?

'Cause 1996 could also be a MY97 "Phase 1.5" i.e. from Sep 96? Does it have a coilpack in the middle of the inlet manifold?

yes, a v4 sti engine should fit his inlet manifold, I did the same thing with my '95 wrx. I don't think theres much difference.

That's right, even if your mate's is a Phase 1, his existing IM will bolt straight onto the STi 4 (and 3) engine's heads anyway. That way you don't have to faff around sorting out splicing Phase 1 looms to Phase 1.5 ones. Just retain all the Phase 1's electrical gubbins....

You can even use the v.4 inlet manifold (but keep the Phase 1's electrics). That way you can lop the inlet snorkel off the TD05H 16g turbo (or fit a bigger turbo/remap ) and go "under the IM" for its intake - a much better option. You'd also need to fit the MY97-00 PAS pump/pully assy. though, to get the MY97/98 intake hose to fit. You just have to muck about with air filter/MAF, oil breathers and DV relocating, etc. to make it all fit...
