Default exhaust heat wrap and rust

I've been wondering, did anybody get rust after a couple of years due to heat wrapping bits of the exhaust(manifold, uppipe, downpipe, turbo)

I don't have a garage, and certainly I don't want my bits to fall off after a few years

Any insight much appreciated.

It isn't usually an issue. For starters the one thing you have to remember is that when the car's moving, the pieces you're talking about will be hot enough to prevent the heatwrap staying wet, while when the car's stopped, they're pretty well protected from rain anyway.

You will almost invariably get some surface corrosion on the flanges but you can minimise it by applying a good very high temperature paint all over the parts before wrapping them. Another coat of the same paint over the wrap will prolong its life as well as making it more difficult for any moisture to penetrate and sit "damp" next to the metal when the car's cold.

Rust isn't something that's really worth worrying about here tho. The cast bits (the turbo exhaust housing, and the left and right exhaust manifold mains) are so thick that they would take years to go through via surface corrosion. Meanwhile the tubular parts (the up-pipe and the front link pipe) will probably fail due to fatigued flexi-joints before they rusted through anyway.

Could be painfull . Joking aside when I replaced my exhaust which I had heat wrapped only the thin plate around the Cat had rusted away. The heat wrap was not done to well and was catching somwhere so got damaged and allowed water in.
