I don't know what's precisely required but I believe it's one of the more straightforward jobs on the Impreza. So at least it won't clean you out, should you get a garage to do it for you.

Let's hope some takers pop along in a bit....

Without knowing how many fasteners are rusted up it's impossible to say for sure, but there's no rocket science to it, just undoing bolts, removing bits and then reassembling in reverse.

Shouldn't be any more than two hours garage time, plus the cost of some oil unless you supply it.

Well, many specialists charge around £55/hour inc. VAT.

So allow £110+ for 2 hours work.

If you don't supply your own 75W-90 diff oil, then you have to add that to...

I did mine on my back on the drive, to fit some Power flex bush's, wernt that bad to remove, but to refit on my own was very tiring and difficult as i only striped the N/S down, i left the O/S shaft and hub in situ.

Id recomend you strip both sides down (unlike i did) and a second pair of hands for lifting it out and in.

Remove the rear silencer and centre section as one.
Unbolt the prop guard - 6 X M10 Bolts
Unbolt the prop from the rear diff - 4 X M8 Nuts and Bolts
unbolt the rear diff support - 4 X M8 Bolts, 4 X M12 Bolts - Leave one of the M12 bolts finger tight to support the diff.
Pop the inner CV joints out of the diff with a lever bar
Unbolt the 2 X M12 nuts at the rear of the diff
Support the diff with a trolley jack.
Unbolt the remaining 1 X M12 from the diff support.
Lower the trolley jack, sliding the diff forward, and releasing from the diff carrier studs.
Twist the diff sideways to remove one driveshaft at a time - being careful not to damage the seals.

Done

That guide was invaluable for me this afternoon - Thanks v much fiestaboy!

If I were to do it again I'd be tempted to remove the front diff subframe supports - the ones just in front of the rear wheels (this is how it is suggested to do it in the workshop manual), but when I got to that point I realised that is what I'd got my jackstands on, so carried on wrestling with the diff. But then again now I've seen how the long vertical bolts that go through the diff works I could have probably made it easier for myself.

How worthwhile is it changing the oil seals for the driveshafts since I have the diff off and accessible. They look completely fine, weren't leaking before I took it off, it is a bit of a pain to pick some new ones up, and I would mean I couldn't finish the job tomorrow - so I'm tempted to leave them as they are, but there is a niggle that I ought to change than is persisting!

Cheers!

If they haven't been leaking before, and you didn't damage them on the way out with the shafts, then I wouldn't bother changing them. Just wipe any dirt out of them with a clean cloth and reapply a thin smear of grease before reinstalling the rear shafts.
