Default fmic ??

peeps.considering a fmic later this year along with some other mods for a my01 bug but before i do (and yes i have looked at past threads ) i have a couple o questions.
y do you need an induction kit,can you not route pipes in such a way to keep the airbox or is it really because the box is limited to what power you want??

also a lot of people have to remove the air-con and relocate the overflow bottle.again can you avoid this?

and i take it all fmic's need the steel bumper bar cut to fit the cooler.is it wise to brace this cut area to install more strength after fitting fmic.

what im thinking of doing is buying just a decent cooler and hard piping it and routing it myself.any thoughts appreciated.

From what I have read the airbox is good for 400 bhp, if you fit a induction kit it can upset the MAF sensor. I have a FMIC on my bugeye had to cut the front bar and the bumper. The pipe routing is due to the exhaust manifold. For me the MAF issue is not a real issue as I normally use a GEMS ECU which uses a MAP sensor. But for when I need the OE ECU in place I have adapted the FMIC to throttle body pipe to allow me to run a blow through MAF. This involved cutting out a section big enough to fit the pipe that the MAF fits into, two pieces of SAMCO hose (or similar) and 4 jubilee clips.

If you fit a Hybrid front mount intercooler kit it includes a cold air kit (but not the filter) so you already have a replacement system. You lose your panel filter because the new pipework goes through that area.
