Sti engine in classic MY97
Is a P1 engine plug-and-play in a classic MY97?
It's hard to believe that a MY99 (or MY00) P1 engine (Sti engine) is a match made in heaven. Is the wiring the same? Or is the p1 ecu to be used? If the p1 ecu is used, does the rest of the electronics work with that ecu?

I may be wrong but although the engine will fit, I don't think it's plug and play with your existing wiring loom. You would need to find an engine from the same year or older. Or as you mentioned, fit a complete new loom.
I put an STI RA engine from a MY96 into my, MY97 T2000 and that went straight in, used the same wiring as well.

Sti3/4 engine is a straight swap into a 1997 UK Turbo.
You can also run the STi ecu, if you swap the cam and crank sensors round, and move the fuel pump relay trigger wire to another ecu pin location. - A better solution would be to fit an aftermarket ecu and custom map it to your setup
