Default Uk to jap swap

Will a jap classic WRX engine fit my uk spec turbo 2000? Will I need a different ecu/loom? Or is it just plug n play? I ask this as the heads have warped on my existing engine and have been quoted like £850 to have the heads took off and skimmed etc so I don't think it's worth having the work done as it's already had a bottom end rebuild what you guys think?

yes it should be a straight swap but remember that the jap spec compression ratio is 8.5:1 whereas the uk spec is 8.0:1 so you may be running the risk of detonation if you dont get it mapped. just remember that if you run higher boost pressures the idea is that you also run a lower comp ratio to accomodate the extra cyclinder pressures.

No, in a word. If you get a 99/00 you will be able to use the complete engine, with the caveats Rich has already mentioned. Anything earlier than an MY99 is a no-no if you want a straight-ish swap.

Given you appear to be on a budget you'd be better off avoiding engines out of an import too, as with one of those you effectively need to add around £600 to the bill for an immediate custom map.

If your engine's shagged and you're looking for a cheapish replacement, the simplest option is another out of an MY99/00 UK car, or, if push comes to shove, a long engine out of a bugeye or blobeye UK WRX.

If the bottom end has already been rebuilt and you are confident its a good job i would get the heads skimmed rather than risk buying another unkown engine.
