225/55 on WRX newage alloys?
Hi,
My neighbour's a tyre distributor and he's managed to source me a set of 4 budget winter tyres in 225/55 for £40+VAT a corner.
As I won't be haring around in the current conditions anyway, seemed like a relatively good deal, but I'd be interested in hearing whether:
a) You guys think this is a good deal, and more importantly
b) Whether this tyre size will be fine for the 17" WRX newage rims.
I've been told it will likely throw the speedo out by 5% but I can live with that if the car drives better in the slush and ice. Opinions or answers anyone?
Cheers

Hi,It is your preference at the end of the day. I would not do it if it affects my speedo, stick with the original tyre size then you cant go wrong. The weather should ease up soon so the hassle of getting your tyres changed again would be a pain.

The thing is, even moving to 18's affects your speedo slightly.
As I'm on a budget and these are only intended for a few months of a year (this is forward planning should snow fall again), I can't really justify spending £100+ per corner on Toyos or similar branded tyres, plus it's virtually impossible to find any ATM as everyone's bought them!
Also I wouldn't be changing tyres when the snow's gone - I have bought a set of OEM WRX alloys specifically for use as winter wheels. I would then use my 18" PFF7 replicas for spring, summer and autumn you see.
That way, if we have awful weather again in February like last year, I can just swap em over again if I've reverted back...

hi mate, seems a good idea using inexpensive tyres for winter but not sure if the 255 will be too wide on the alloys to acheive a decent sidewall profile!
asfor the tread type i wouldnt want to go too mad on cheaper tyres but pootling around town may be ok.
oh and your profile pic is a spit of my motor, nice!!
sorry, just read thread again.225 should be ok.(i thought it said 255!)
