Default Help needed with a different noise

Right when you reverse the car makes a different noise, think this is because it's a dog style gear in reverse only. Now i reversed on the drive today it made a different noise, louder and sounded like a bit of a wine or meater if you like, and sounded like it was holding back, but you could not feal it holding back Hard to explain. When I got to work tonight after a 13mile drive, I tried it again, and it was still there.
Any ideas clues to what this could be or a sign of.
cheers for any help

Checked and topped up gearbox oil was not low, i no reverse is abit more noiser but it's not right. Did a total oil change on all the drivetrain plus engine about 4-6months ago using syntax driveline, will check the rear diff tom.

the diff maybe mate and as for the dog in reverse only i doubt that as dog engagement rings wouldnt and i think cant be put in just 1 gear also the whine is mostly from the straight cut gears if u dont have a full dog then most likeley u have helical gears which are noisey as **** in reverse always .

Are there any clunking noises when you come on and off the power?
My first Impreza ('99) needed a replacement rear diff. at only 1800 mls. as it was showing similar symptoms to what you describe, but also had a clunk when coming off the throttle. I'm guessing a bearing failed allowing the pinion to move back and forth, so altering the mesh of the hypoid gearing, causing a louder whine in reverse.

If you meant that reverse sounds different because it's straight cut rather than helical, you'd be correct. There's nothing "dog" about it.

Any ideas clues to what this could be or a sign of.

"Noises" like this are almost impossible to diagnose over the interwebs. A new or louder noise in a gearbox that only happens when certain gears are engaged is most often a symptom of broken or damaged teeth - or maybe low oil level (which tends to result in damage anyway).

Are you sure this noise is actually emanating from the box, or from somewhere else on the car? When you first heard it, had you just given it some stick in reverse or something like that?

If in doubt, get it looked at, as there's very little we can do on here bar take very wild guesses.

Only does it in reverse not sure if it's the box or rear diff or any diff for that matter. Topped the gear box up today but it was reading just over half way, cheers for the imput.
Will get it checked asap.

Does it make the same noise if you lift off the throttle with the car rolling in first or second gear and allow engine braking to slow it? If not, you can pretty much rule out diffs and so-forth.
