Default Performance Tuning Help - 2002 WRX Bug Eye

Good Evening Guys & Girls,

I am new here and was after some help if possible.
I purchased a 2002 52' Reg WRX Turbo around 9 months ago. I have now finished paying for it and would like to start to do a few upgrades.

The car itself has the Pro Drive Package but I am now used to the performance and would like a bit more.

I have a budget of around £2500 and would like to get up around the 300BHP mark.

Could any of your experienced guys let me know what is the best way forward?

Thanks for any help given in advance.

Cheers
Chris

Its worth keeping an eye on the for sale section on here and you could save yourself a bit cash.

Richard has posted the names of the folk to get the parts from in his post above.

you can get most things from here on the for sale page to be fair but ebay always throws up some bargins just watch out for fakes.

I got the tubo, 3 port soleniod from here.
exhaust, injectors, intercooler and fuel pump from ebay.

i did that for less than £1500 and to be honest any thing more than that you may as well sell the car and but an sti or wr1. althou having 330bhp is well suited to the 5 speed wrx box than a 6 speed box.

Ok, Well thanks for all your help so far. Didn't expect to be helped out so quickly so thanks for that.

I have just looked up that turbo on Ebay and there is one currently on the for £750. So I will keep my eyes open for a cheaper one.

I understand the turbo, exhaust, injectors, fuel pump but what is the 3 port soleniod and what is its purpose?

I would be more than happy with 330Bhp.

Ill put up a post requesting the parts and see if anyone comes back to me.

Cheers
Chris

Ther are loads of different turbos you can go for but i belive the vf43 is best suited. Theres no point buying a brand new one as a turbo is good for two or three donors if in good condition.
The 3 port electonic boost control GrimmSpeed introduces the most complete and easy to use 3-Port Electronic Boost Solenoid available on the market. Our aftermarket boost controller allows you to raise the OEM boost levels in a quick and efficient manner. If you try to raise the boost on the weak OEM boost solenoid it will start to become unpredictable and unable to maintain proper and safe boost levels. Using our solenoid you are able to spool your turbo quicker and maintain a rock solid boost level. We have made our solenoid to withstand 120psi, way more than any Subaru will see.

try that mate it shouls help you out. It's not essential but as your spending that amount of money you may as well do it right.

Becareful with the turbo's on ebay some of them are copies. Its better to buy from some of the tuners / sellers on here as you know you are getting the real deal or keep an eye on the for sale section as there are always folk on here selling to upgrade in the search of more power

Richards1522 - do those guys ship to the UK? If so I will order one of those now.
I will then be on my to increasing power. I think I will get all the parts together then get them all installed at the same time.

Where is the best place to get a remap? is it ok to drive the car to the remap location after all the new parts have been fitted.

g7pr7 - thanks for the heads up. I will look out for one for sale on here.

Cheers

I wouldnt get one from ther mate they are abit expensive and you have to ship them.
look up harvey on here and email him. I got mine in the post this morning after ordering it 2 days ago £65.
Personally i would get it all at the same time as you would have to keep remapping with each mod you make as they are big ones.
the car will run very lumpy but you should be ok to drive home just dont use boost. I have every part i listed apart from the turbo as i bought it today from scotland.
The garage i use is only 2 miles away down country roads so i can take it steady with no boost untill remapped

I shall start my quest to source the parts that I need then.

I will need to find out where this Daren guy is located. I would need to get the parts installed and then get my car to him.

Again thanks for your help.

Cheers

What brake / suspension mods have you made or will these be incorporated into your budget ? If you intend using your additional bhp, your brakes will be well beyond their limits . Uprated ARB and droplinks will transform the handling. Power is nothing without poise and the ability to use it. Happy New Year. Bob

take your time dont rush into buying anything, as above think about brakes and suspension before power, remember you want to go round the corner not straight on. all of the bits you will need suspension/brakes/engine will all come up for sale in the next few months

Hi Bob,

I will be incorporating Tarox drilled and groved discs and the best pads I can get. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Where do I get the uprared ARB and droplinks from and which ones would you recommend?

Total agree with you about power being nothing without control and the ability to stop.

Cheers

Really! Not heard that one before.

Any suggestions then to the 'best' breaks for 2002 WRX Bug Eye then?

I intend on keeping the car for some time so I do not mind spending some serious money on it.

Whiteline 22mm front and 24 rear and whiteline droplinks front and rear and then get a good geometry set up from somebody.

Look for a user on here called cusco kid. He sells whiteline gear at prices that are very hard to beat. He will advise you on what you require.

VF 35 turbo is the std. STI item, good for 330 bhp.

I have the Whiteline 24mm rear bar and proflex alloy droplinks, they really transform the car. As for pads, I have DS 2500 pads gripping DBA 4000 Wiperslot discs, goodridge braided hoses and DOT 5 brake fluid however I will try PF pads next time as advised by my preferred tuner. Massive difference over the current setup. Bob

Nah, if you have that kinda money available, get the 6 pot AP's. 330mm kit will fit under 17" rims and stop you more than well enough. Even the 4 pots would be good.
