Question Probs with neutral switch on sti !!

Hi all,
Just joined and need some advice please.I brought a 2003 version 8 sti bout 6 months ago and i have noticed that at times she seems a bit gutless so i decided to get her on the dyno.
Well the guy expected bout 275hp and 260lbs torque as performance wise she is standard apart from blitz catback exhaust and induction kit.Anyway the dyno results proved that she wasnt producing power properly as the first run came back as 248hp and 280lbs torque, torque was great for standard scoob with the bhp was awful. Then the guy said it was the neutral switch on the gearbox that was knackered as when he rest the ecu the scoob produced 293hp and 280lbs torque.
Want im wanting to know is i have been quoted approx £70 plus 2 hours labour totalling £190-£200 to get it fixed...is this a bit expensive or about right?
Also has anyone else had the same sort of probs with losing bhp caused by neutral switch?
Any advise would be great..thanks

It takes about 20 mins to replace the neutral position switch. £70 ALL IN would be about right.

Yes, i had mine replaced. It was evident when mapping. Was replaced at the dealer under warranty. I kept thinking it was in the low-boost map.

I`ve had the same problem too, caused random boost, sometimes it was ok, sometimes the ecu would think it`s not in gear! Sorted at Zen when the mapping was done, sure that was around £70 too.

I did this about three times on my MY02 WRX. Pretty straightforward DIY job, no special tools required. IIRC part was ~£30.

NPS problems disable the AVCS leaving the car down on power, smooth but not swift.

How can you tell if you have a problem like this, Ive been experiencing ittermittent performance issues on my 03 WRX and I just thought it was me. Sometimes the car pulls very well and sometimes it feels like its being held back.

Yes that is exactly what my scoob is doing,at times she has been really sluggish and just felt totally gutless and other times felt really quick.Get your scoob on the dyno and if it is running a lot lower than expected, they can test for it.

Did your scoob run at more bhp then when it was fixed Gaz,and could you tell the difference straight away?

Is this car a UK car or a JDM car due to the fact this is where using versions gets all confusing as 1. the versions stopped at 6 and they were JDM only, 2. new age STI's come in all different forms, none of which have to be the same (especially mechanically)
So in future if you could please just say what market and what year it would save lots of hassle as im fed up of typing out what "would" have been the market versions if they continued them and it wouldnt have been a version 8

AFAIK, the UK/Euro sped WRX doesn't have AVCS so that isn't the problem. Get your ecu checked for a failing lambda sensor, and consequent ecu "pulling" the timing.

Hi..sorry its a newage 2003 uk spec european import sti.All fault codes have been checked 3 times due to the problem that the scoob has been losing power and there was no faults showing.Like i said the only fault found was the neutral switch was temperamental on the gearbox, when you change gears.Once the ecu was reset the car produced an extra 45bhp on the dyno. The man that put my scoob on the dyno said it was defo the neutral switch that needed replacing as the rest of the car was running perfectly.
Cheers !!

Have they changed the neutral switch now?
I think the ecu reset probably cleared the fact that your ecu found an issue and knocked back the mulitplier tbh, try another garage if your not happy with that one you went to

Hello all. Sorry to Hijack the thread for a moment. I went out for a run today and as it was snowing again so i took it easy for around 40 miles with no issues other then my P0037 code which im getting sorted next week... HOWEVER once i got stuck behind some traffic, I dropped down a peg and gave it the nuts to get passed, the Engine management light flashed (its already on for the P0037) and it seemed a little down on power, anyway that aside i took it easy for the next 20 miles until home but meanwhile i ran a diagnostic on the PSI3 which came back with the following P0301, P0302, P0303 & P0037. The first three codes that are misfire codes should be due to the NPS having read the above, is this fair to say? Also do you think the P0037 would hinder the power too...? Also is there an instruction somewhere to fir the NPS yourself? Thanks Rob
