steam coming out would indicate a leak with the heater matrix.

Dash out You lucky man!

Done mine not so long back.

My windscreen would mist up so I bypassed the matrix for a while untill I could be bothered to do it. That was in the summer, wouldn't fancy no heaters this time of year. Brrrrr!

Can you smell the antifreeze in the car when things are starting to mist up? I could.
I then checked the passenger footwell. It wasn't wet but just a little damp right up by the bulkhead.

I had a good 2nd hand unit for a tenner and changed it myself. You're looking at a day to get it done. It's not that bad a job, just a pain in the ****.
Didn't price new ones so can't help you there.

Default Heater matrix

New from a main dealer they are around £250. I could not source a non OEM part so had to buy from a Subaru dealer for my 1999 classic.
Staggering price for something about 20cms square with a couple of pipes attached.
Local garage took about five hours to change it as the dash had to be removed. All in bill around £500.
