Question Engine Noise doing my head in.

Hi lads, im new here, nice to meet you lot

Ive bought a Subaru Impreza Turbo 2000 W Reg.

I wounder if someone could help me out please.

Here goes............There is a strange noise on the right side where the inlet manifold is, it sounds like a clack clack clack clack noise (pretty quiet) it only happens when low revs are applied in gear and also a quick pull on the throttle cable, only does it a few times and not in higher revs,

The oil is crappy at the minute and needs an oil change, but thought i would get it checked before i replace the oil as it might diagnose any probs with her,

Would you mind having a look at the pic and video to see what you think, comments are appreciated

Cheers, Mark

Sort of ticking noise? Almost certainly a noisy injector. Haven't had a Scoob without at least one. Get in there with a screwdriver as a stethescope.

If you're in any doubt though get it to a specialist, diagnosis via internet is never 100%. Use one of the good ones and if its just a noisy injector, it'll most likely be FOC.

Welcome btw.

This will sound strange but I had what sounds like a similar noise, two garages told me I needed a top end re-build as it was valve related. Took it to a third guy and it was a loose spark plug. Tightened it for me and gave him £20 for his time and sorted. Worth a try!!!!!!

Injectors will only tick on idle and when throttle is applied, on lift of they are closed, simple to check this.

With the area you have circled, it can be just about anthing.

There's an ever-present ticking which sounds like normal injector activation, and then there's a louder/deeper sound which is heard only as you blip the throttle.

As has been said it's very difficult to diagnose such noises over the internet, but is it the first or the second one you mean?

Yes, the usual sound of injectors/valve clearance and also the sound as you blip the throttle, which is pretty typical of piston slap. When the throttle is opened slowly, it's hardly there. Was the engine cold/cool or fully up to temperature? Recorded sounds are never easy to pinpoint accurately but it also reminded me of the "spitty" sound of a blowing exhaust manifold as the throttle is blipped.

hi lads, to answer your questions.

The engine was upto temperature (been running for 10 mins)

It the deeper sound im trying to diagnose.

Ive noticed the exhaust shield under the car is a bit rattly but nothing.

Been to a guy this afternoon with a stethoscope attached to a metal pointer, he let me have a listen also and he thinks its a piston slapping just below the area that i pointed to but the other inlet area.

Need to check the sparks but not sure how, may ask a friend.

The guy has suggested a new engine as he said changing the pistons would be expensive. Dont really want to do that.

Oops. Possibly not the best time to say that my initial guess on hearing that deeper noise was piston slap too - albeit this said with the same caveat as John, which is that it's impossible to localise a noise like that without actually sticking your ear (or screwdriver) onto the engine.

As for "changing the pistons being expensive", it might be worth you having a chat with DavidAPI or similar as to the best way forward.

After listening to the link which I missed it does sound like piston slap more so than bottom end etc, however its tricky hearing it this way. If the slap is not too excessive, and compressions are "ok" this is something that you may be able to live with, as is fairly common to a varying degree on these cars. Best thing is to have someone familiour with Subarus have a listen and go from there.

imo slap (which mine has) is more of a dull, deep knock. that sounds more snappy.

A mate had similar and it turned out to be a loose plug lead.

Strange it sounded mechanical tho.

No. If you want to swap in an entire built engine, you need one from an MY99 or MY2000 Impreza Turbo 2000 or (EU market) Impreza GT.

If you're just after a long engine, you can use a 99 or 2000 Impreza Turbo 2000, or MY01-02 Impreza WRX.

If you go to a short engine you can theoretically get away with both older and newer although you'd be well advised to avoid MY98 and earlier as the engines aren't as good and you introduce differences in compression ratio that need to be worked around very carefully.
