Question 1 or 2 tonne crane for engine/gearbox removal

Hi

As title really - if I want to pull engine and gearbox together (I know you'd normally do engine on its own) from a classic ?

Will a 1 tonne crane do it if I keep to the 3/4 extension 500kg position at most ? I've estimated that maximum extension which pulls 250kg might be pushing it a bit.....

Or do would I need a 2 tonne which will still pull 500kg even at max extension ?

Thanks.

Be safe, go for the 2 tonne. Easier to work with the crane a bit further from the engine bay.

Well on its way out either through the bonnet like this picture:

(Sorry dont know how to do links.)

Or I could take it out underneath and lift the car over it.....

I'd guesstimated about 275 kg for a classic engine and box/diff so a 1 tonne crane would be ok upto 3/4 length.

Just wondered what most people here have used - as jonboy0373 said I thought a 2 tonne would definitely cover it but they are more expensive second hand on ebay...

As the moment I'm day dreaming about a Murtaya - I'm trying to budget all the things I might need to try and get second hand.

Thanks.

For what's it worth that crane in your pic looks a similar design to mine, which is 2 tonne. As others have said it's worth getting a 2 tonne for the extra reach, you also get extra height with a 2 tonne on full extension.
