Default Methanol options

I'm fitting a Solaris soon, so it makes sense to have a Methanol map. I've done a few searches and found that Jennychem is a popular source. My problem is I live in a flat and don't like the idea of a 25l drum sat about.

I found this supplier on ebay offering 5L containers for £5.45 + delivery, which works out more expensive, but a safer option for me. Is this stuff good enough, it's 99.5% pure?

Methanol (Methyl Alcohol) 5L For Biodiesel 99.5% Pure on eBay (end time 08-Dec-09 12:41:51 GMT)

No where near, I'm in Surrey and the E85 stations are up north

Locations with BioEthanol E85 - Morrisons

Methanol should give a decent boost from what I've read though.

only problem with buying and storing in 5 litre quantities is that 5 litres is not enough for a full tank of V Power.

For the first time, but second fill I'll probably only add 20 or 30 litres, so 2 or 3l methanol. If I add 6 litres every time I fill up, won't the concentration of methanol keep going up?

Not a great deal I let mine go till the fuel light comes on> Im using e85 and add 10L per tank of fuel> i guess it goes up a little so i tend to just use plain old petrol one in say 4 fills this keeps the mix level from rising to high>

mine doesn't go much below half a tank because of fuel surge.

Is this 99.5% stuff good enough?

Sorry dont know anything about methonal

Thats gonna make it really hard to keep the mixture fairly similar> havent a clue how your going to achieve that> Fuel surge at half a tank thats unusual< Used to get it on mine when really low but i think ive found a cure> I've had a play with mine and havent had surge in over a year now.

Mines running a walbro as are many and what i did was mount the o/e pump on the nearside in the tank> I've fitted a switch so i can switch on as required, but you could just wire into the o/e pump wiring>

Now i havent got this pump plumbed into the fuel lines> all Its doing is pumping fuel from the n/s of the tank to the o/s straight onto the filter bag of the walbro.

I can do roundabouts etc with the fuel light on and no surge since ive played around.

I was going to fit a swirl pot when I do a forged build next year. I like what you done with the OE pump. Airplaines do the same to equalise the fuel between wings, I saw it on Discovery

I recon the mixing won't be a problem. I'll keep 2l methanol in the boot and top up 20l a time.

Anders - don't worry mate. There's far more leeway with methanol than you might imagine. If you have a map for 10% methanol, it's fine to add a little more - say up to 15%. Yes, the engine will run fractionally leaner but the extra cooling and octane rating of a higher % mix will keep everything running just fine. If you ever run out of methanol, that's not a problem either provided you don't go too mad with the loud pedal - the ECU and lambda sensor take care of correct fuelling up to about 70% full throttle. Indeed, if I'm doing a long motorway trip (not really the right environment to 'play'), I often just use V-Power without any added methanol to save me carrying too much methanol with me. My car's done 30,000 miles on methanol and 77,000 in total. When I had the valve clearences check last week at Zen, Paul commented on just how good nick the engine was in

Cheers for the feedback. I'll buy some 5l containers when it's time

When the Solaris goes on, I'll try and get the methanol map sorted on the same day so there's a more accurate comparison

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do you get it out of the drums into your can? The JC website says that 210L barrel comes with a free syphon pump, so is it possible to get one for the 25L drums too?

on the 25L drums (big plastic bottles)

go into a garden type shop and go where the water butt section is, they will have different dranage taps that fit to the bottom of the water butts. this also fit onto the 25L jennychem bottle.

then i just have my 5L bottle under it, undo the tap and ifll it up. when finished replace with the jennychem cap.

remember to have gloves etc as its not the nicest stuff to get onto you

p.s
somethis like this
the size of the cap that screws onto the 25L bottle looks the same as the one in this pic

It's the handling of it that's a problem too. 5L container I can pour over the kitchen sink in to 2l pop bottles (no kids to worry about).

This stuff is going on the floor in the spare room and I don't want to fit taps / valves that might leak etc.

only use the tap when filling up, and replace to the standard lid when not in use.

I'm also looking at getting my classic wrx mapped to run a 10% methanol mix , have a question , do i need a ecu that can have 2 maps or would it be OK to have just the one map to run 10%methanol all the time , my car is a weekend car and not used on long journeys , so i wouldn't mind having to put the methanol in every time i fill up , but the reason i ask is most people on here seem to have a map for normal petrol and a map for 10%methanol mix , could i jsut have my car mapped to run 10% meth all the time , cheers
