Default Smoke in the Cockpit

2.0 GL 1997: Smoke appears after turning on the heater, would this be a faulty heater matrix? Also I have also notice a slight dripping of water from behind the glove box on the passenger side.
Any views appriciated and is it an easy diy job to replace?
