Question Turbo Inlet... how do I get the bugga out?

Hi guys,

MY99 classic STi... Just got my blown turbo off and was ready to replace with a new tubby when I noticed a tear in the inlet pipe where it joins to the business end of the turbo.

I need to change the whole thing, but how the heck do you get that thing out?

I've disconnected both ends (turbo off and air box) and all air pipes that feed off of it, but its not going anywhere while stuck under that mainfold.

Please dont tell me I have to lift the whole mainfold off???

Can I just move the power steering res. and wriggle it out forwards?

Hammer & chisel, chop all the protruding twigs off and as you spotted, disconnect the PS pipes to ease it out....

its held in place with bolts and the likes under the inlet. and im affraid it will be easier to remove inlet to get it off. bit of a big-ish job but easy enough

there's no bolts holding it... it wriggles around freely, but its just so restricted by everything... I do think the manifold needs to come off... oh boy...

its not bolted its self. but there is the fuel pipe and other bits that are bolted and jamming it in! so not a simple case of wiggle out.

and its not that hard to do mate! pretty simple

You do have to remove the inlet manifold to replace it, and getting the new one on is a tight job too... we've just done it on our MY99 track car!

Also be carefull what you replace it with, as we've gone with the silicone inlet option and this has given us compressor surge in 4th & 5th on part throttle, a common side effect of silicone/larger inlet pipes apparantly. (Also FMIC & aftermarket dump valve are contributing to the problem)

My advice would be to replace with an original subaru item, a good second hand one will do the trick as they are circa £250 new from Subaru! Also the aftermarket silicone ones for the MY99 are a bugger to fit as they havn't got the reduced cross section on the 90 degree bend so foul with the PAS reservoir a bit.

So the samco type (ie RCM Roger Clark Motorsport - RCM Product Detail) you wouldnt recommend and just go for the oem part?

I've pm'ed a few ppl breaking their cars in order to ge tthe oem part as my preferred option anyway.

But its def manifold off as opposed to just loosen and lift slightly?
And is that just a case of the (4 bolts each side is it) which attach it to the engine or are there other things to undo?

The RCM one might be a little better fitting than the cheaper equivilants... however if you're happy to spend RCM money then I would definately advise a new OEM Subaru part!

Even better if you can get a good second hand one...

I'd rather not spend that kind of money...

I mite have found the cheaper otpions as you said...

SUBARU WRX STI 1999-2000 TURBO AIR INTAKE PIPE SILICONE on eBay (end time 24-Oct-09 18:16:59 BST)

But I see that 90 degree bend which would possible foul the PAS res.
Unlike the one for the earlier classic... SUBARU WRX STI 1996-1998 TURBO AIR INTAKE PIPE SILICONE on eBay (end time 29-Sep-09 19:33:15 BST)

That one seems to have a reduction in the pipe inorder to miss the res?

That's the one that we have installed (the first one 99-00) it does go on, but the PAS reservoir does deform it a bit!

The second one won't fit as it's the wrong shape, you can't see it in that picture but trust me as we went through this with them. The later GDA pipe is a better match, but would have to have one extra branch/hole bunged, much the same as the earlier one would.

Stay with the original subaru one if you can...!!

Nothing wrong with being slightly deformed as long as it fits and the air flow isnt affected too much. Altho you say this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUBARU-WRX-STI...d=p3911.c0.m14 fits better (with closing up one of those feeds).?

But I will def go for the oem part... its all about locating one now. Lots of ppl breaking their cars so fingers crossed it wont be long til one crops up.

Thank you very much for your comments MY94BlueWRX

No problem... The GDA one looks better, but we didn't try it so not sure on fitment exactly. The 99-00 one does fit, but like I said we now have some compressor surge so unless you absolutely have to, I would go OEM.

We would switch back to OEM, but we've fitted inlet manifold spaces & parrallel fuel lines, and can't bring ourselve to take it all back off!! So we will try and map around it!

Hope you get it sorted.

That one doesn't look as though it'd bend quite right around the back of the #3 branch - but if MY94Blue has got the same one and knows better, go with his opinion.

I've got a GDA/GDB Samco TB997 on mine. Needed minor surgery to block one feed and re-orient the crankcase breather inlet (you'd have to do the same on that eBay one), and I've got a remote PAS reservoir anyway, but I believe they do fit, with a bit of squashing, next to the standard pump/tank.
