Default New oil pump - priming?

I'm just about to fit a new oil pump this afternoon (EJ20 turbo), I'm assuming that it's a good idea to prime it first? Ok to just fill it all up with oil, or is there any special procedure?

After fitting, I'm going to remove the crank sensor and fuel pump relay and dry crank until the oil light goes out.

Advice much appreciated as ever!

You can't just fill it up. Due to its position, most of what you'd put in would fall straight back out as you fitted it, and, as you have to use liquid gasket on the mating surfaces, oil dripping everywhere will cause you problems getting a good seal.

As far as establishing circulation and pressure is concerned, if you're using a new oil filter make sure it's pre-filled. Then, as you say, crank it for a good old while - don't stop immediately the light goes out, go a good few seconds longer for insurance.

You don't need to disconnect the fuel pump relay. Pulling the crank sensor stops spark and injection so that's already sorted. Do take the plugs out though - at least if you're removing compression forces, there's less opportunity for transient oil starvation to cause problems.

Thanks for the advice, that definitely makes sense!

Got the new pump on, going to leave it overnight for the 3 bond sealant to dry before dry cranking.
