Hello all, the car is an Impreza Turbo 2000 MY 1996.
The first start of the day takes a fair amount of cranking to get the engine to start. When it does start it struggles and then hunts for its idle, it runs fine and for the rest of the day it starts fine.

I am not burning any oil or water and the battery is new, have had the alternator checked and it is fine, the starter motor does not struggle and is engaging properly.

The car is running with a straight through exhaust which has been fitted for over a year and a half, the problem has only been happening for the last month. Have had the lambda sensor changed.

Any help would be much appreciated.

coolant temp sensor and crank sensor are the normal suspects

mine does this. i have changed the coolant temp sensor and it improved a bit. but it still hunts and revs low for the first 5 seconds or so. i just live with it now!

maybe the maf.
crank/cam sensor not seeing the correct position.
temp sensor.

have you checked for error codes ?

Started the car (new lambda sensor) this mornig and it was fine though it still hunted a bit, will keep an eye on it and get it checked for error codes and change sensors if need be.
