Default dead turbo?

here are my symptoms.

the car was driving fine, then started to hold back was in and out of boost.

then no boost (or next to nothing), opened bonnet and the turbo sounds like a box of nails under throttle.

i am assuming my turbo has died?

conformation anybody?

The only way any of us can confirm this is to stick head under bonnet. Short of that, it's guesswork based on what you've told us. And yes, on that basis the turbo does sound knackered.

Whether it is or not, next step is to speak to someone local about getting it looked at - and try to avoid starting the engine in the meantime, just in case bits of disintegrated turbo are making merry inside it.

ah!, i drove it 200 miles yesterday like it on the way back from wales.

the car drives ok but just with zero boost.

when i put my head under the bonnet and blip the accelerator it sounds like a tinny rattle.

it was the noise coming from the turbo that lead me to the 'its knackered' conclusion.

99 Blue, I had a similar experience.

Changed the blower & the same hapened!!

What it was, UP Pipe Cat.

Bits of the Cat was breaking off & got stuck in the implellors!

It's more common than you think.

So, get your blower off, check the impellors for bits of cat.

Fit a decatted up pipe & you never know.

Good advice for a newage WRX owner Alan, but it doesn't apply to classic shape cars (or newage STi's). They don't have the uppipe cat.
