Default Trying to cut out at idle

I have a 2001 UK300, which since yesterday is now trying to cut out when stopped at traffic lights etc. The rev counter flitters between 1100-0 revs. Power low down seems to be reduced and drives rough at low speeds, but over 30mph doesn't seem too bad. Changed the spark plugs today and the old plugs were really black. Also signs of black smoke coming from the exhaust. Have no idea where to start looking for the problem. Obviously seems to be running rich, but could be a number of sensors etc. Can anyone help me please?
Mods on the car are a Blitz de catted exhaust, Ram air induction kit, Tek 3. All mods done over 5 years ago, and this is the first bit of trouble I have had with the car since new.

I'd like to know too as mine did this last week. OK at the moment but have a feeling it was giving notice.

try the idle control valve first, its on the back of the manifold unbolt it and give it a good clean.

Looking back now I think mine was trying to give me a warning too. It started with some one off loud pops from the exhaust 3 or 4 weeks back. Not the normal pops and bangs but jsut one big pop every now and again.

It's going to be a big vacuum leak somewhere, some major piece of hose disconnected or split.

mine did a similar thing. if i moved 10 foot then stopped the idle would drop then pick up. Did it after i put vpower in instead of tesco 99 ron. Topped up the tank again with 99 and has never happened again. Not as dramatic symptoms you suggest tho.

Here I am to report back. Car was taken to Subaru at Slip End this morning. Left it with them, and received a call to say it was the Air Flow Meter that needed replacing. So I gave him the nod to go ahead and got a nice £350 bill to go with it. They can't get the part until tomorrow though, so have had to leave the car with them and pick it up tomorrow.
Apparently the air flow meter takes literally 5 mins to replace, so I guess these parts are either really expensive or they spent a while sussing out what the problem was.

Thought it might be. Thanks for getting back with the answer.

Now, where to find a MY97 MAF a bit cheaper than £350?

Ok, now for the twist. Car was picked up this morning and all the problems were still there. Maybe not so much black smoke coming out of the exhaust bit the idle problem and trying to cut out was still there. They said I also had a problem with my dump valve.
So I've taken the dump valve apart and have found the spring inside was broken. Put back the original dump valve and car now running perfect.

So the real question is..... Did I really need to spend the £350 on the air flow meter or was it just a dump valve problem????

Probably suspect it was a bit of both, but will try and check the price of the air flow meter.

Thanks for the advice

Just as a bit of an indication of the breakdown of costs involved, labour was £55, the rest was the price of the air flow meter.

Ok, my findings so far are:

Swapped mafs between my two MY97 uk cars, no difference, if anything worse. Swapped Lambda and my car running fine. I am feeling a slight misfire now and then off boost, but it may be me being oversensitive as I am now looking for something to be wrong. Will have to wait for the results on the wifes car as it is off the road at the moment (roof being repainted)

Anyone got a three wire Lambda for sale?
