Check the plug leads mate, plugs and coil packs will cause these problems as they break-down when hot.

As long as the smoke isn't coming from your exhaust. If it is then that's a BAD sign. Could be leaking oil into a cylinder. I had the same symptoms on a GTO and it turned out that a cylinder bore had been scratched and oil was leaking in via a piston ring. Cost me £5k to get it fixed.

If it is oil in the exhaust and he only changes the packs, your advice could cause damage to his engine

Get it checked by a professional with the proper diagnostic tools

Good
Black smoke would indicate unburnt fuel, prob caused by a duff plug or lead

like b13bat says,it sounds like coil pack.i had the prob on 98 gt-b.heat from engine breaks them down prematurely.you can change leads and plugs 100 times and it wont help if coils buggered.not sure wot model you got but have you checked connection to thottle position sensor?good luck
