A T-reg means the car was produced between March and July 1999, so yes you have a MY99 (produced between Sep 98 - Aug 99).

The MY99 were the 1st cars to indeed be fitted with the "OBD-II", which allows mapping of your OEM ECU.

The previous MY97/98 also had the 1st incarnation of "OBD", but its protocol didn't allow the ECU mapping facility. It could only be used for diagnostic purposes (I think)

Yeah, you can hook up an OBD reader to that socket. The earlier MY97/98 had the 1st "OBD" protocol (see above for more info...).

Not heard it called an EOBD before. OBD means On Board Diagnostics.
But with your car you can do a free engine management light check here: Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Knowledge / Reading ECU Fault Codes

Under the instrument binnacle, down by the steering column is a piece of flat, under-dash trim. I think the socket resides on there somewhere...

Yes, of course you can check for error codes as joey has posted too!

Sorry, should have mentioned that too! - fool.

Thanks guys, I'm not after error codes tho. Just wanted to know if it had EOBD.

EOBD is the European Version of obd-II, anything sold in Europe is eobd compatible from late 90's.
Just quickly can anyone recommend a code reader for jap cars as everyone iv tried is ****!!!!!

No. The info you've been given above isn't correct. 99/00 UK/Euro/JDM cars have an OBD2/EOBD-shaped 16 pin diag socket but the ECU doesn't speak the OBD2 language - which is why you'll find numerous posts round here from people asking why the generic OBD2 scan tools they've bought on eBay don't work.

To diagnose one of these cars via the onboard system, you need something that speaks the Subaru Select Monitor protocol.

If push comes to shove though, and your workshop equipment has the ability to test voltages directly rather than via info from a diag port, you can always connect directly to the signal and ground lines in the MAF sensor loom.

Oops sorry OP, I didn't realise - Splitpin to the rescue again.

SP, so the OBDII/EOBD-equipped M99/00 cars cannot download any diagnostic info to a OBD reader then?

They can do some, as the PSI3 monitor shows. I also have this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...EOIBSA:GB:1123
but have never tried it on my MY00. I will give it a try tomorrow

Blame Subaru for being confusing again, but yes, that's correct - with the probable exceptions being the US market cars which, as far as I'm aware, do have a proper OBD2 mode.

The SECS monitor uses the Subaru specific diagnostic protocol, not ODB. So do DeltaDash, EvoScan et al. Let us know what your generic tool says. My money would be on it saying it has made a connection, and then throwing up a comms error.

Yep will do. Although I'm thinking it won't work also, as I tried one once before, and it was just as you said.

Pin out the wiring loom it is then. Am I right in thinking on one pin there should be 12v, 5v ish on another an earth and the other goes back to the ecu, what pin number at the ecu connector? I think the root cause of my problem is water getting into the loom. Has anyone else noticed the drain for the bonnet vent covers is right above the MAF connector!

On a 99/00, the wires you want are in the blue plug. The sensor signal goes to pin 1, should be a pink wire with a blue stripe (top right pin in the connector). The ground goes to pin 31, which should be black with a green stripe. Bottom row, second in from the left, assuming you are looking at the wire side of the plug.

Yes, it's not ideal, especially bearing in mind the cosmetic nature of the vents, but equally it shouldn't be a problem assuming your loom is in good nick. The connector is (should be!) waterproof.

Yeah I spoke to madhammer (he's breaking a classic) he has a sensor plug in good nick I think I'll change it to take that out the loop. The locking tab is missing off mine but it always seems to be all the way on. Might have a go at modding the cover too. Thanks for the input splitpin will try over the weekend see what I find I'm pretty sure it's not a sensor problem.
