Unhappy 2 Turbos, in 2 weeks......

Need advice about Tomei Arms M7760 Turbo.

I had a trackday, and had IHI turbo problems (turbo was factory fitted).
So I take the car the performance garage, they fit above turbo and also did a few mods at my request at same time, FMIC, bigger injectors, Full ECU (prev piggyback).

Car given back, does 222 kW ATW, bit more turbo lag, but more power/acceleration where I need/want it. All good.

Then the turbo fails, manifesting itself as MASSIVE amount of oil smoke coming from exhaust. MASSIVE is an understatement, btw.

Garage wants to fit another Tomei Arms M7760 Turbo, but I thought they should put a VF34 on instead.

Are Tomei Arms M7760 reliable. Any thoughts about way to go.

Never heard of that turbo in the UK.
Did they check the hole size on the oil feed banjo bolt? Too much feed could have popped the oil seal?

in my experience its down to the mapping as ive had the same probelm myself on my sti, so powerstation did a type 25 oil feed and a remap with my new turbo and ive been fine since but they said the map was what was really needed but i had added other mods like you.
hope this helps.

Question

Mapping should be ok, as they do the mapping and dyno work for quite high level cars.

Would psi have any effect on oil seals ?
Or perhaps temp, as a result of higher psi ?

I'll ask them re the banjo bolt.

Is the car a newage? If so there is a Subaru work instruction for checking the filter in the banjo bolt that connects the turbo oil feed to the cylinder head. Main concensus in to remove and discard it, as if it gets clogged it restricts the oil to the turbo and kills it. I will post a link to where I found it shortly.

I have no direct experience, but the Tomei turbos are modified IHI turbos, so the quality should be fine.

If you have already had one failure, with another straight away, it will almost certainly be an oil feed issue, or if you have a 2.5lt engine, it may be suffering from massive over speeding.

Question

The car is MY98 and has been stroked (sp) to 2.2 Litre, or just under.

First turbo failed due to a bit of the compressor impeller vane breaking off, but the turbo has been spooling for 7 years, and has done some hot trackdays, up to 35ºC.
7 years is quite respectable.

Second turbo is odd failure, as I never got to do a trackday with it, d'oh!

However, the tuner has now decided to put on a Trust T518Z, are these any good (ie reliable) ?
I'll have to do some IN surfing !!

I recently changed the Turbo on my newage & asked about this Gauze filter Re. it's location Nobody could tell me !!

But Thanks to 360ste, I now know where it is, But my Turbo is all nicely fitted !!! I really want to check this for piece of mind, after going to all the effort of a swap but it does not seem very accessible & easy with everything now in situ

This is the likely reason for a turbo dying on me, was coked up. My new specialist recommended removal on fitting new turbo, posted back in Feb or so.
