i was driving back to Norwich ok but about 10miles before I got home I've started to get a weird knocking noise. just after changing gears and putting the throttle down there was like something was rattling inside the car that was the first noise. just as I got to the last traffic lights before me house the whole car starts to vibrate and it sounds like the engine is moving alot and the engine light started flashing. I got home and parked up and lifted the bonnet and I could see the engine was moving from side to side on idle and when I pulled the throttle cable it looked like the engine wanted to come out of the engine bay plus the gear **** is shaking like mad when on idle. do you have any ideas what this could be as I don't know if 1 of the engine mounts have broken or I have piston slap or my bottom end is going have you got and advice.

 

Pretty certain an engine mount, or mounts, have broken.

This happened to my old Clio 16V and it freaked me right out as does indeed sound like a stratospheric big end failure.

If it is just an engine mount, then count yourself 'lucky' - that's the 'best' possible underbonnet failure to have! Phew...
