Default spark plugs

I have a 99 impreza sport non turbo (ej20), however it has an 05 2.0 non turbo engine (ej20) and gearbox. The mechanic who fitted it says still to buy parts for a 99 as I still have the same engine managment as before but just replacement parts, does this sound right?

No you'll need to buy parts for the engine you have put in it regardless of the ECU otherwise you run the risk of them not fitting.

Welcome to scoobynet...

Yup that is correct, forget that you have an 05 engine, just buy service parts for your 99my car.

ha, is that a yes or a no then? the engines are both the same and the gearbox is still cable fed and not hydraulic/pneumatic, it is still 2.0 non turbo ej20, and the engine went straight in with no adjustments or changes so the only difference would be the ECU or engine management which is still set the same as the 99 rig as it hasnt been changed... helppp please

As Phil says, service parts are as per the original 99MY spec. There's minimal to non-existent risk of stuff "not fitting".

Just to clarify my statment:

All service parts for your car should be ordered as a 99my (using your Reg No or Vin No as a referance) as there is no difference in the type of plugs or oil filter fitted between a 99 & 05 EJ201 engine) & all the other service items are not fitted to the engine they are fitted to various other components of your 99 car. Telling a supplier that you would like a service kit for a 99 car with a 05 engine fitted would probably just confuse them.

With regard to the engine internals, you would have to be a bit carefull here as there are some variations, although both engines are classed as a EJ201 and share the same crank, pistons, bearings, rods, head gaskets, cam belt, idlers & most sensors, there are detail changes to the cam shafts and cyl heads for exapmle on the 05 version. So at this piont (if ordering non service parts that bolt directly to or in the engine) I would be asking for parts to suit a 2005 EJ201.

Phil

Thanks for the help. So if I wanted to buy some new spark plugs and ignition leads I would buy them for a 99 not an 05 due to the way my engine management is set up to burn fuel e.t.c ?
