just had another look and the wheel that drives the belts in the center is not spinning very central.the noise seems to coincide with the movment of it.
could it be a crank bearing?
is that a big job?

I can't believe it I thought I was the only person - but on mine the pulley bolt worked its way loose. The bottom pulley then wobbles around hitting the timing belt cover and making a horrible knocking noise. I thought the big ends had gone. Anyway check the pulley bolt, if it does come of it will be a nasty/expensive job I think!

As above - possibly crank pulley loose or timing belt tensioner worn/knocking.

Hopefully its nothing too serious for you.

Ive also got this at the moment, my key has snapped in my crank and im having nightmares trying to get the toothed crank pulley off the crank as the woodruff key has it pinned in place. I think my only option is to drill the toothed crank off and replace or to get hold of some pullers.

It looks nasty. Thankfully my crank is fine, I was very very lucky by the looks of it!
