My 1998 sti is going to die before i sort this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My 1998 sti has a nasty tapping noise, more noticable when friving at 2-3000rpm up a slight hill, will not make a sound when standing still! Changed the oil, checked the heat shields, it has solid lifters so cannot be a tappet noise, and does not sound like bottom end what so ever ANY IDEAS!!!???????:conf used::conf used:

lean over the engine when it is at idle, and slowly go up and down the reves by hand, at any point do you hear the tapping noise then?
does it only happen when the engine is cold?
is the tapping coming from the engine area, weak fuel pump?
any error codes come up or does the ''check engine'' light flash up on the dash?
ummm any sound clips of it?

Yeah it defo is not doing it when standing still, only seems to do it when warmed up, but not all the time, spent about half an hour today trying to make it do it, but nothing untill i was in second gear going up a slight incline, sounds like a tappet but a bit rougher!!! fuel pump is good and the car still performs like it should do! no error codes what so ever!

You sure it's not serious detonation, aka knocking/pinking/pinging?
Some engines, if the fuelling is off i.e. running lean, display these symptoms when the engine is put under arduous load (e.g. going up an incline) and between a certain portion of the rev-band (can be anywhere).
Is it a not too pleasant-sounding rapid metallic, er... "pinging" noise?
Just a thought...

Hmmmn... hopefully not det then.
It's prob something loose that has a particular resonating frequency.
Sorry mate, I'm all out of ideas.
If you're able to recreate the conditions, then get a passenger to take a vid/record the sound of it and post a link to it..
