Fit the biggest K&N cone that will fit in the space available. The largest of these cones usually have a 160mm base to accept a tuned ally, or carbon, trumpet between it and the MAF:-

If you do this, then a ECUTEK remap is required, so combine it with other mods like a full decat system etc, before the map...

Do a search. Unless you're running bigger power there's very little point in going for an induction kit - instead stick with a decent panel filter and the original air box - that'll be good for at least 300bhp, if not a little more.

After that you'll need to look at either a kit with a heat shield like the K&N Apollo, or, and I think what more people go for, a wing mounted induction kit with a separate cold air feed which will involve removing the existing snorkel assembly in the driver's side wing.
Don't stick a cone filter in the engine bay next to the turbo without a heat shield as it will just suck in hot air and will probably retard your performance instead of improving it.
And as the guy above says, you'll need a remap too so your MAF can cope with the different readings.

...But yeah, as said above, if you don't intend to go beyond around 350+bhp, and/or fit a FMIC, then the OEM panel filter can cope and is best option.

i wouldnt advise fitting an induction kit to 98-00 car unless u r going mafless(simtec ecu) otherwise it could cause u maf problems.im running 300/300 on genuine subaru panel filter.
