a mates asked me to look at his impreza.
wont rev over 3500 rpm
i had it idleing and the exhaust by the 1st and 2nd cat was glowing red, never seen this before. as in pics
so i thought maybe the cat is blocked, i removed 2nd cat today and started car but still same, i thought it shud rev up be be very loud.
there seems to be plenty of exhaust gas coming from 1st cat and doesnt seem blocked, but mayb i shud remove that too.
any1 got any other ideas,
mafs being changed by vehicle owner
car idles fine but does sound missy when being reved
when the car hits 3500rpm is sounds like a rally car popping and banging very bad.
all plugs are ok and coil pack is firing fine, all leads in correct position. no cel light on.
other possibilites i can think of are crank, cam sensor, throttle position sensor
but at 3500 rpm is sounds like it on limiter.

thanks matthew

naw u`ll prob need get scoob garage or somebody wi a reader for ur on board computer its limp home mode i think it registers a fault on ur fault code and restricts revs to under 4000 as turbod cars usually boost then so if u go get ur managment system red it will tell u wats gone wrong and then they can reset it and revs will return to normal ..ialso thnk ur flame sensor on ur cat has detected a fire and caused this fault...does check engine light on dash illuminate wen u turn ignition on and go to start if not then someone has disconnected under the dash:O:O

well when u first turn on ignition there is no engine light, hazards flash tho. when running is disconnected sensors, crank, cam, throttle position etc, car seems to pick them up fine.
i removed cowling and its diff set up to turbo. no green plugs and black separate. the black plugs are key ignition plugs. no other plugs disconnected under there.

timing is fine, guy told me to take clocks out and check resistance on speedo cable etc. so did. then with cable out pluged clocks in, reved up to 6.5k as normal, done this 4 times, but then went bk to normal, also put bulb in check light, checked ecu, 33, Vehicle speed sensor 2, pluged all bk in, got speddo working as it wasnt before, but still no joy, no codes in ecu as cleared but wont rev past 4k now. and engine is getting very hot, water temp fine
got speedo working again, dunno if that means the speed sensor is now ok, but still wont rev, checked everything, no joy, got check engine light on, put bulb in. switched to spare clocks i have, still no joy. reset ecu, no affect, but check light just had constant flash. played around with speedo a bit more. so it stopped worked, speed sensor came back up on cel, so put all bk together so speedo worked again, restet ecu, no error codes now found.
tried diff maf, timing mint, head shot, lol HELP

speed sensor 2 code 33 kept coming up. done some reading, the vss is in the clocks where the cable goes in, two cogs and a sensor that sends a signal to ecu, so being the type of person i am, cant wait, lol, went bk down garage, took clocks out, put mr wrx clocks in that i know work, got speedo working, reset ecu and went for drive, still same, but now its not throwing up a cel light saying a problem.
iv exhausted all routes i now know.

Was searching for VSS, and saw this thread.
Did you find the problem?
I would have put money on a defective MAF. The first EJ series engines were programmed not to rev higher than 3500 if the MAF wasn't sending the expected signals. The hot exhaust could be over fueling.
