Default Replacement Engine

Has anyone got any experiences (good or bad) when buying an engine from this company.
Company is called Prestige Partzs, the engines they sell on ebay built by a company called SMR engines.

I have already enquired at API just trying to find out all of the available options.

Thanks.

if you want a second hand, jet washed engine that has been sprayed silver then go for it, if you want something that is going to be reliable the do a search on here for recommendations on engine builders.

I had an SMR engine via this outfit (nee MDKL - they keep trading under different names to get round the law) and they're just plain wrong. They just stuff any old head on any old block (regardless of model year and whether it's a Legacy/WRX/STi) and mail order it out on a pallette...

My HG went after a year and when ZEN opened it up, the heads were held on with dowels and twine!!!!!!! (ZEN couldn't believe how it lasted even a year!)

Go figure...

I'm now the happy owner of a proper ZEN-built motor.

Do it RIGHT!... do it ONCE! (I leant this the the hard way )

Buy cheap, buy twice I say! Don't use them whatever you do, complete rip off merchants. I've had a few people come to me after getting duff engines from them (whatever they call themselves).

Agree with the others about S*R - their engines make exceedingly good Boat Anchors

How many bhp does the silver paint add?
A client sent one of these to Darren today and if I heard right it was £1100 complete with a guarantee.
£1100 . I think I would want nearly two engines for that . Oh an it's an STi 3.

£1100 .
Nice work if you can get it. The "guarantee" sounds interesting though. Do you know whether it was actually written down anywhere?

Stick with APi mate, a cheap engine isn't cheap if you then have to go elsewhere to get another one from a decent company.

Get the job done right, leave happy, pay once!

If the OP is strapped, you may get lucky with another member's engine for sale:-

https://www.scoobynet.com/private-sa...her-parts.html

It's 1996 so it could be a late MY96 phase 1... Or an early MY97 phase 1.5 ..

I had, and still do have a smr engine. Has lasted 2 n 1/2 now and still going, only prob i had was like your self the HG let go. When i took her apart to put new HG in everything was fine and engine was in very good condition, apart from very cheap **** hg they use. Guess i just got lucky.

But am still considering a rebuilt anyway want somthing i can take round the ring 1ns amonth at least.

Also my advise is just get a rebuilt if you can aford it. You can never be 100% sure with a reconed/used engine. Some might be good, most wont. It's a risk.

Default SMR Engines

hi,i saw this post on google and just had to say something,i have a sti v4 classic,i bought i "recon" supposed "sti" engine from smr for 1000 pounds, after 1000 miles it let go on the head gasket,to cut along story short i sent it to alan jefferys for repair.after he inspected the damage he found it was some nasty wrx lump thrown together with no care or attention,i am now left with no car and a bill for 3000 pounds to have it fixed.there is alot more to this story totalling over 20 months of hell,if you wanna here it all i will tell you.
the bottom line DO NOT BUY A ENGINE FROM S M R.THEY ARE FALSE ADSVERTISING and im sure in breach of some laws some where along the line.i am desperate for a new sti engine.can anyone help me please!

Speak to David at API for an engine or try Scooby Clinic to see what they may be breaking.
If these people have had your trousers down I hope you have the determination and stamina to nail them to the board and save others an avoidable experience.
