Default Need help! My scoob's in the garage and need advice on a decision!!!

hi there peeps, i need help! my turbo recently siezed up on me and i couldn't figure out why???? so i put it in on monday to have the turbo rebuilt.... anyway the reason for this was because of the cat, and considering i had a de-cat system already fitted i was abit confused so went to the garage to see for myself, turns out theres a cat in the manifold to turbo down pipe! i never new this and felt a bit stupid after arguing with the bloke telling him my car has no cat!!!.... now i'm left with the options;
- get a cat from main dealer for £570+vat
- get an aftermarket cat for £280+vat ??????
- or de-cat that aswell???

but i really need to know how the de-cat option will affect the running of my car as i'm not gonna have the money for a re-map for a while as this is costing me enough!!! but i need the car to remain reliable as its used everyday...

thanks for taking the time to read this and hopefully help......

if you are going to decat in the future.....might as well bit the bullit and decat it now with a remap for "save" measure, although some have run "fine " decatted without a remap (not reccommmended )
an aftermarket decat up pipe with a remap is around the same as a main dealer cat fitted

+ you will see some gains on the bhp as well

Are you talking about getting a cat to replace the up-pipe one just failed, or a down pipe cat?
Where did those prices come from?
A s/hand std up-pipe cat is IRO £50 and I'm not aware of an aftermarket catted up-pipe.

Personally mate i would decat it. I had mine decatted and had a generic map from open-mapping.co.uk no where near as much as a custom map but a good stepping stone, they turned off the cel codes for the exhust aswell for me.

these are the prices i've been given by the garage where the car is, a company called BenchSound Tuning....they have worked on plenty of scooby's before i know this cos i've seen them in there so i thought they knew what they was doing, starting to get a bit worried now....
its the up pipe that goes into the turbo (so i'm told)..... i've only had the car 18 months and this takes the repair bill upto £5600 over this period of time, seriously thinking about selling it now.

£5,600 what on earth has been wrong with it?
Ok like butty says a s/hand upipe or even new one is £50 ish of ebay, only about £100 to get it fitted then whatever it costs to rebuild your turbo,
Ive just installed a TD05 in mine, got a broken one of ebay and recon'd it, while they have the turbo off its just as easy to swap the uppipe anyway. Sounds like they might be chargeing a lot of labour, tell them you will provide the uppipe and they can fit it.

A generic stage 2 map is only £125 from Stage 2 Subaru map.
but I would provide the uppipe myself and give it to the garage mate, only my opinion.

well i was right, my car has already got a full de-cat system as i suspected.... whats actually gone is the particle filter that stops dirt going into the turbo! so all this hassle i've been getting from them is because they dont know what they have been looking at!!! **** takers...... and the turbo couldnt be rebuilt so had to get a re-con turbo.

well i bought the car about 18 months ago, an for the first 2 months run like a dream..... the one saturday night coming down the a13 trying to break the land speed record, i started losing speed and turns out two of the pistons had melted!! althought the car still run smooth but with a loud knocking, however in the few days i used it until it went into the garage i pulled away from my aunts house i had second gear come throught the side of the gearbox dropping oil and metal all over the road!!! then finally siezed up and locked all 4 wheels solid on the way home..... so the gearbox and new clutch and flywheel costing £2000 from api.... they also rebuilt the engine costing £2500 and i now pick my car up on wendesday which is when i have to part with £1200!!! so its actually £5700 in 14 months! think its gonna be up for sale soon as i'm never gonna be rich while i own this car!!!!!!!!

particulate filters are on diesels and after the turbo, there is a cat in the up pipe of a wrx that is prone to failure

Have a pal who had an up-pipe cat problem, so he fully de-catted and his car went from 200 to 300 bhp once mapped !

I've never heard of the up-pipe cat breaking up on an unmodified TD04 turbo'd new age WRX. They only give problems with higher temps / flows when bigger turbo's fitted. Did you see the broken down cat ??

The Sti up-pipes have no EGT sensor hole and if you fit one then you will Have CEL problems. Either buy a second hand cat (as butty says) or a propper WRX de-cat pipe from somewhere like Haywood and scott.

Bugeye WRX exaust diagram

No particulate filter at all as mentioned by scoobyboy... the explanation you were given does not ring true!

As per Shaun really - it all sounds a bit confusing. Those prices sound more like downpipe prices.
I can't believe its £570 for a new catted up-pipe, even from a dealership.
I've never heard of an aftermarket CATTED up-pipe.

the car is running 300 bhp, as it has already had a few mods, and a re mapp and as far as im concerned the car has got a full de cat system as i have the reciept to prove this.
this whole situation has left me confussed and out of pocket!! i pick the car up tomorrow so i guess ill find out then what excatly has been done on it.
im thinking about putting it up for sale after the wheels have been re painted...i think ive had enough!!

If it's running 300 BHP then it's had quite a bit done to it since it left the factory in Japan a few years ago.....

Selling now might not be a good option for the unloved WRX bugeye whatever the mods, I've no idea what you paid for it but I see you have paid £5700 so far and selling it for £4.5k ish might leave you quite a few grand out of pocket

I'd try and sort it and run it for a while to recoup some of the money you have spent ..

All IMHO

Bit confused - £1200 for a recon turbo + fitting??
I recall that the classic Scoob had a gauze screen in the inlet pipe before (?) the MAF. Did the Bugeye WRX have something similar? If so, they could be saying that it's broken - up and been swallowed by the turbo? Just a thought!

http://www.allcorsa.co.uk/forums/sho...ltd-4980.html?

Benchsound are not one of the usual scooby specialists I have come across.....API, Zen, RCMS, Alan J, ASP, SC, SCTecnix, AFperformance, JGM.......names to numerous to mention all over the country ... (sorry if I have missed out the others)

Just not heard of these guys.

no

the cat referred to here is in the uppipe as fitted to 01~05 WRX.. not your classic.
