Advice needed on version 4 type R engine swap
Hello everyone,
I just picked up a version 4 type R a couple of days ago. I got it cheap as the engine is a little buggered.
I also own a normal version 3 STI (non DCCD) which has a very clean engine. I want to swap this engine (complete with its version 3 STI ECU & wiring harness) into the type R, while maintaining the type R's gear box, DCCD & rear diff.
Can anyone tell me if this is ok or am in for trouble??
- will the engine wire up straight forward?
- Will the DCCD still function??
- Or am i better off forgoing the DCCD & moving my version 3 non DCCD gearbox & rear diff as well into the type R?
- Do all classic DCCD cars have R180 diffs or are there some with R160 diffs too?
Any help or useful info will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Imran

The v3/4 are compatible so no need to change the wiring loom. Transplant the complete engine inc turbo and plug in the ecu and away you go
The DCCD has its on ecu and the engine swap will in no way affect how this works or operates. The R180 diff started with the late version 3 type r/ra cars.

Banny,
Many thanks for that - So i can keep the version 4 wiring loom & ECU?? Thats great stuff!
Can you tell me what ECU the version 4 type R should have as standard? The code, connectors etc??
Also, if i were to put a version 5 or 6 engine into the type R - i would have to change the wiring loom & ecu then, correct?
Cheers,

Yes the clocks will all work fine, iirc remember correctly the code on the cover of the ecu should be 7S for a v4 type r.
Yes if you change the engine for a v5/6 then you will need to change the loom and ecu.
