Default IS THIS OIL SAFE TO USE ?

My mate has just bought a my96 wrx ra and its due its oil change.
He has went ahead and bought Halfords 10w/40 part synthetic oil, is this safe to use ?

Halfords 10W/40 Part Synthetic Oil 5L from Halfords Price £21.99 Free 8 Piece Screwdriver Set When You Buy Any Halfords Part or Fully Synthetic 5L Oil

Ive told him to hold off until I can get some safe info for him.

10 40 semi synthetic (shell helix) is the standard oil for these cars, never go below a 40 rated oil though (5w30 for instance) and its not recommended to go above a 50 rated.

Yea I knew about the grade, but not sure about the Halfords brand.
Ive done a quick google and it says Halfords oil is made by Comma which is owned by Esso.

So just trying to find out if its safe to use there own brand.

Although many on here would not touch the stuff, for everyday use it's fine. Maybe stick something better in if he does a trackday.
Halfords do a 5/50 synthetic which arguably, would have been better.
I assume he got an oil filter from there as well?

Tony, why shouldn't you use 5/30 oil ? My service book says it's ok for a 04 bugeye WRX.

Ive used the Vauxhall 10/40 semi myself, thats all I could get my hands on at short notice. Also it never gave me any problems.

The joys of helping a mate in need, hence this thread and the turbo thread.

I used 5/50 halfords track stuff, put car on the track and it was quality. engine felt so free and the temps where kept very low on the hotest day of the year.

changed oil for same stuff after track day and its as good on the road

Here we go again.

Any API and ACEI Spec oil will do. For the record I have used Comma 15/40 semi synth for years without problem in cars with well over 400bhp and for lots and lots of miles. It costs me under £25 to do a full oil change and that includes a genuine filter and crush washer.

I would say for track abuse the more expensive stuff is probably the better choice but for 95% of people with normal road use anything else will be fine.

The expensive stuff is better for longevity but I change mine every couple of months and havent had a single problem. A recent strip down supports this as there has been very little wear on friction surfaces.
