The car's tickover seems smooth but the car shakes when I'm at the traffic lights or stuck in traffic etc.

Any ideas, is it normal?

not sure, just had a wheel balanced that was previously shaking the car badly at 75mph, so that might have loosened something.

Shakey idle could be many things but commonly - uneven cylinder compression or an overly lean idle causing slight missfires. Any check engine codes? Perhaps the lambda sensor is a bit old?

mines the same. ive got a 02 wrx. Going to check the coilpacks and change the plugs. Hopefully will cure it.

I would say this is more than likely due to a broken engine mount.

can I check the engine mounts myself or does it need someone who knows their way around an engine bay.

If the engine is running smooth, then I would suggest you check the engine mounts.

When my classic had a dodgy coilpack I could see the car rock slightly when it missed. If you put your hand lighly on the bonnet, you should be able to feel the car move when the misfire happens.

It's a constant shake but not violent, it's only noticeable when the revs have settled to the lowest tickover point. Would a misfire be intermitent? Mine has been like a slight shake every second for about 3 months.

Had the engine mounts checked today and apparently they are fine, no fault codes but I've had the ECU reset and the juddering seems to be curbed slightly. Been to two tuners who both think it's something other than a misfire so it looks like it's going on the rollers again.

The car is now at a 4th tuner!! Still no diagnosis!!! The cam cover won't come off to due bolts rounding off the holes but a compression test has revealed all cylinders are spot on except cylinder 1 which is 35% down. The tuner doesn't think that is causing the idel shake though, he's pointed out the lambda sensor is fine and doesn't really get used that much on a PPP WRX anyway, but he's noticed the fuelling is spot on throughout the rev range except on idel where he's told me the car is backing off the fuel for some reason.

Incidently the sparkplug in cylinder 1 had a slightly broken tip. The car could be in the garage sometime now as it looks like Piston ring damage. Luckily I have 3 weeks warranty left!

I don't suppose you have had the cam belt changed recently? Mine did the same when it was replaced and one tooth out of position..

It was done about 7,000 miles ago. The garage who has the car think it could be a tooth issue but they can't get the cam cover off to check as the threads have rounded off. They've no tool (borescope?) yet either to check what damage has been done and due to another car they have going wrong my car will have been there 2 weeks before work has begun

Did the slipped tooth cause any major damage to yours?

I had a cambelt change last week, and first time round when we fired her up, she was missfiring and sounded horrible. Just sort the timing out again, and providing you havent driven it, it should be fine. Mine was spot on after we re-fitted the belt and spotted it was a tooth out.

I ran mine for a week or two with a tooth out, believe it or not it seemed to be a bit more lively! It was just when I stopped at traffic lights the the whole car shook like you describe. We took the cam belt off and it did look to be a tooth out, it was quite difficult to tell to be honest. When put back on one tooth along ran fine again, no shaking or damage had been done. It must have just been the timing at tick over that was all out..

One fault has been found today, there is dodgy botched wiring that is effecting the sparkplugs, this seems to have caused the poor cylinder compression. Shaking issue is still to be discerned.

The garage have been on the phone to the warranty and The Car People all morning without success and they've told us to phone them and bollock them. The Warrany company are saying they don't cover wiring and that we've had the car 11 months.

We are trying to ask them to fix the engine and we'll pay for the wiring, the garage have already said the wiring will have caused the damage over time.

AT the moment the warranty company are hanging the phone up. Utter scum, use The Car People at your own peril folks.

The Warranty have finally confirmed they will not pay out.
The Car People have just now told us they will not contribute anything.

We've been shafted again by a reputable car firm.

That's what I thought. Rick says there aren't any stocked in the UK. Unless there are no standard ones but plenty of forged ones. I'll try and find out.

The fella at garage that our car is at have finally emailed The Car People the repair quote. The Car People have told us since a flat out "no."

The quote is £4500.

We can't afford this and are now forced to phone trading standards, this time we won't hire solicitors though.

Worse thing is because the Car People have been leading us on we have to pay the garage £500 now because of the mechanic's time doing more paper work etc.
