Engine warning light is on, reset had no effect. The fault code is P0170 'Fuel Trim 1'

Does anybody know what this means 'cos Mitsubishi Main Dealer doesn't?

Fuel Trim is defined as the engine management function which keeps the air/fuel mixture as close to the ideal 14.7:1 stoichiometric ratio as possible. I suspect that your oxygen/lambda sensor has failed.

Your main dealer "should" have a diagnostic computer which plugs into the OBD II connector and will be able to confirm this in seconds. Hope this helps!
