Default Under bonnet insulation- can it be removed

Hi guys

I was doing an engine bay clean yesterday, at the moment the whole thing is being let down by the insulation stuff on the under side of the bonnet,

What does this do? does it absorb heat or reflect it back?

Can it be removed without my engine overheating or the paint on the bonnet melting?

Ideally i want to get rid of it all together but am worried about adverse effects, if subaru genuine parts were not such a rip off then i would go and buy a fresh new one but i already know that if i call them for a quote they will come back with some stupidly high random figure

Any suggestions

Dave M

I think it's designed as engine sound deadening, and to also stop the underbonnet heat from tarnishing/cracking, etc. the paint - therfefore possibly preventing the paint on the outside to deteriorate over time.

is there any kind of material it can be replaced with because it looks tatty.

I really need to know if it reflects heat or absorbs it, if i can find that out then i can start searching for a suitable replacement material

Well it's a dark, non-reflective material so will absorb the heat if anything, rather than reflect it back....

Doesn't absorb much heat but does help. Main purpose is sound profing thats why its thick.
